Bharti, RCom emerged as Major Gainers in the Telecom Sector

RelianceReliance Communications (RCom), Wire and Wireless India Ltd. (WWIL) and Bharti Airtel were among the major gainers during the week.

Bharti Airtel, Asia's leading integrated telecom services provider, grew 5.7% during the week. According to reports, Airtel is planning to offer $13.1 billion in cash to MTN Group and shares for acquiring a 49% stake in the South African telecom major.

There is no certainty that the MTN stockholders will accept the proposal of Bharti Airtel. There is possibility of MTN shareholders demanding for a higher offer from the Indian company. Stockholders holding a combined 75% stake in MTN must sanction the agreement.

Reliance Communication (RCom), an Indian telecommunications company, witnessed a rise of 7% during the week. S Tel and Reliance Infratel contracted an end-to-end telecom infrastructure deal for telecom towers, fibre backbone for intercity connectivity and transmission for BTS sites. RCom will accomplish this deal through its tower subsidiary Reliance Infratel.

S Tel's deal with RCom covers 6 circles i. e. Orissa, Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, NorthEast, Assam and J&K where the telecom operator projects to roll-out its GSM services shortly.

Shares of Bharti Airtel, on Friday closed at Rs 434.80, up 4.39% or Rs 18.30. Total volume of shares traded was 1,791,140.

Shares of RCom, on Friday closed at Rs 265.45, up 0.76% or Rs 2.00. Total volume of shares traded was 1,407,272.
