Sofia  - Voting began Sunday in Bulgarian parliamentary elections, the first the Balkan country has held since joining the European Union in 2007.

Socialist Prime Minister Sergey Stanishev seeks another four-year term in office, but his government, plagued by corruption scandals and the economic downturn, faces an uphill battle against the opposition GERB party of Sofia Mayor Boyko Borisov.

Several other smaller parties were tipped to win at least 4 per cent of the votes and so clear the hurdle to qualify for parliament, which may complicate the post-election scenario, especially if, as is expected, there is no clear-cut winner.

The 6.9 million registered voters may cast their ballots between 6 am and 7 pm (0300-1600 GMT).

Exit polls are expected shortly after voting ends, but, owing to Bulgaria's complex, mixed electoral system, the first trustworthy figures are not likely before Monday morning. (dpa)
