Canada, Nov 5: The Muslim Canadian Congress (MCC), a liberal Islamic group, has urged the Canadian Government to cut off all links and cooperation with Pakistan.

Welcoming Foreign Minister Maxime Bernier’s rebuking of emergency in Pakistan, the MCC said, “Ottawa should use all possible levers available to send a clear message to the generals in Islamabad that Canada will not cooperate with a rogue regime that tramples over the judiciary and rules the population at gun point.”

The MCC also urged Prime Minister Stephen Harper to “impose a ban on Pakistan army officers and their families travelling to Canada”, the Daily Times reported.

“We urge you to inform the Pakistan Government that normal diplomatic relations cannot continue unless the Constitution of the Pakistan is restored, all arrested political prisoners are released, and censorship on the media is lifted,” the MCC demanded.

Since 1958 the US has propped up four army generals. Each one of them has been overthrown by the mass uprisings of ordinary Pakistanis, MCC’s Tarek Fatah said.

Fatah said the threat posed by Islamists and their jihadi agenda was well recognised, but the best way to fight extremism was to foster democracy and not via military interventions. (ANI)
