Charge sheet framed against 62 accused in the Ahmedabad blasts case

Ahmedabad serial blasts case is expected to see hearing on Jan 19 as the Designated Sessions Court has framed charges against the 62 accused on Monday.

Justice Bela Trivedi framed the charge sheet in the high security Sabarmati Central Jail for the July 26, 2008 blats which killed 57 people and injured 150. The blasts were carried out in close proximity to one another starting in Maninagar which is the constituency of Chief Minister Narendra Modi.

The blats occurred in the hospitals as the injured from other blats in the city were brought in. 24 died in the blasts at the Government Civil Hospital including doctors, nursing staff and those injured in blasts elsewhere.

The charges framed were under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, Explosive Substance Act, Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act, Information Technology Act, and Arms Act among others.

The 62 accused were present as the hearing was read out as out of the 95 accused identified; three are dead and 33 still absconding. The charges include waging a war against the state, conspiracy, murder, attempt to murder and organising training camps to promote terror activities.

A public prosecutor in the case, Amit Patel said "The charges were read out in front of the accused in the courtroom in English as well as Gujarati." The charge sheet was also framed Under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 120 (b), 121 (a), 153 (a), 302, 307, 326, 435, 436,
427, 465, 468 and 471.

Abu Bashar is identified as the main culprit and Zahid Sheikh, Qayamuddin and Abdul Razak as the masterminds in the charge sheet. A special plane flew Abu Bashar to Ahmedabad after he was arrested in his village in Azamgarh district of Uttar Pradesh.

According to the statements of Safdar Nagori and Amir Parvez, main players in Students Islamic Movement of India the planning for the attack began in November 2007.

The charge sheet details how the cars used for explosions were stolen from Mumbai and the changes with bicycles being purchased and fitted with explosives to carry out the blasts

The investigation slowly joined evidence to clear the conspiracy and identify the accused.
