CM Chandy inaugurates biogas plant at Secretariat

CM Chandy inaugurates biogas plant at SecretariatKerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on Sunday inaugurated a biogas plant on the Government Secretariat premises.

Installed by Bio Flame-Biogas and Energy Private Limited, the plant uses modern technology and can process biodegradable as well as solid waste.

The plant is capable of processing up to one hundred kilograms of biowaste an hour and producing eight to ten kilograms equivalent of fuel.

Chandy said that there was a need to give importance to processing of waste at the source and installing biogas plants at organizations and houses.

D. S. Sreekantan Nair, under-secretary at housekeeping department, said that the plant would process waste drawn largely from the Secretariat's in-house canteen.

Describing the functioning of the plant, Nair added, "Waste, mainly from the canteen, will be processed through this plant. The fuel will be used for cooking at the canteen kitchen. The slurry can be used as manure for the garden here."

The plant can burn all waste, and it will not require segregation of plastic. The smoke it will emit will not pollute the environment.
