Coke, Pepsi to alter recipe after health warning

Coke, Pepsi to alter recipe after health warningGlobal beverage giants, Coca-Cola and Pepsi are planning to change their recipe in order to avoid being required to put a cancer warning label on their products.

The authorities in California have added 4-methylimidazole, which is used in making the drinks, to the list of carcinogens. The companies have already introduced the new recipe that contains lesser 4-methylimidazole, in the state and will roll out the same across the US soon.

A spokesperson for Coca-Cola pointed out that there is not health reason for changing the recipe. Diana Garza-Ciarlante said that the company changed its recipe in order to avoid being made to display a scientifically unfounded warning on its products.

A study has show links between the chemical and risks of cancer in mice and rats. However, there is not evidence that the chemical poses risks to humans, according to the American Beverage Association.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said in an assessment that and individual will have to drink more than 1,000 cans of Coke or Pepsi in a day in order to consume same amount of the chemical that was given to mice in the scientific study.
