Baidu team asked to Sit out of AI Contest for Rule Breach

Sidestepping the rules has cost a research team from Chinese search engine giant Baidu the international artificial intelligence competition. The team has now been told to sit out of the competition because of rule breach. Baidu was confident about beating Google and Microsoft in the competition, but the chance is not available anymore to the Chinese team.

The test was about the ability of recognizing images through computers. However, it has transpired that Baidu submitted far more tests than the rules allowed. As a result, it was not possible to compare Baidu’s results with others in the competition.

According to Tech Crunch, a Baidu spokesperson confirmed that the company has arranged a press conference for next week when it will announce "an investment in and strategic cooperation deal with a prominent US-based startup."

The report said that a deal was expected to be announced next Wednesday, sealing the partnership between the two firms.

Baidu has focused on emerging markets, including Southeast Asia, Egypt and Brazil, where it recently acquired e-commerce site Peixe Urbano.

Chinese firm to buy smartphone apps distributor

The move, which is Baidu's latest effort to diversify beyond its core search engine business, is set to mark China's biggest merger and acquisition (M&A) in the Internet market after Yahoo's $1 billion deal with Alibaba in 2005, reported Xinhua.

According to the MOU, Baidu will purchase the entire issued share capital of 91 Wireless for a total of $1.9 billion.

Baidu China's top search engine Baidu has filed a law suit against Register. com Inc which is its domain name service provider, on Wednesday after a cyber attack which severely affected its services last week.

A group which called itself the Iranian Cyber Army hacked into the site on Jan 12 and routed the users to a page created by them. The page featured the Iranian national flag and a message which read "This site has been hacked by Iranian Cyber Army." This group is also believed to be behind the attacks on twitter in December.

There was some retaliation as Chinese hackers attacked Iran based sites the next day.

Various executives of Baidu resign fuelling speculation

China's top search engine, Baidu's chief technology officer, Yinan Li resigned from the job citing personal reasons after the chief operating officer Ye Peng had left the company less than two weeks ago also on personal reasons.

Baidu is China's leading search engine provider and is expected to raise its market share if the search engine major Google decides to quit the country.

Robin Li, Baidu's Chairman and CEO said, "We appreciate all that Yinan has contributed to Baidu and we wish him every success in his future endeavors."
