US District Judge Lucy Koh also rejected demands from both companies to conduct another trial on different issues over claims that the Galaxy smartphone manufacturer unfairly used technology controlled by Apple to build its iPads and iPhones to market knock-off products.

Samsung-ElectronicsChennai Jan 29 : Samsung India Electronics is planning to increase sales of its split air-conditioners, refrigerators by 50 percent and expand its distribution network in smaller cities, a senior company official said here Tuesday.

"We plan to increase the sales of our split air-conditioners and refrigerators by 50 percent this year. Our share in the split air-conditioner market is around 13 percent," K. Mahesh, vice president (Home Appliances) of Samsung India, told reporters.

Samsung-LogoSeoul, Jan 25 : Samsung Electronics' fourth-quarter operating profit hit a new high helped by solid Galaxy smartphone sales and improved earnings in semiconductor business.

Operating profit was 8.84 trillion won ($8.26 billion) in the three months ended December, nearly double from a year earlier, the company said in a regulatory filing Friday.

It was the highest in its history, and posted the record-breaking earnings for five straight quarters. The reading was in line with the preliminary figure estimated by Samsung, reported Xinhua.

Samsung said it had sold over 25 million Galaxy S smartphones, 40 million Galaxy S II smartphones and 41 million Galaxy S III smartphones.

Samsung launched the first Galaxy S model at the end of May 2010, amid increasing competition with iphone maker Apple, the Herald Sun reports.

According to the report, research firm IHS iSuppli said last month Samsung beat Nokia in mobile phone sales and Apple in smartphone sales last year.

The firm posted an operating profit of 8.8 trillion won (8.3 billion dollars) for the quarter, a 90 percent jump from the same period a year earlier.

That would make it the fifth quarter in a row of record profits for Samsung, the BBC reports.
