Congress not worried over a spat between Pranab and Mamata

Congress not worried over a spat between Pranab and MamataThe congress party does not appear to be worried over the differences that surfaced between the Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee at the meeting of cabinet ministers on Thursday.

Mr. Mukherjee is opposing a lenient or populist railway budget which does not include any fare increase by Ms. Banerjee. The differences surfaced when the cabinet was discussing subsidy regime for fertilizers.

Mr. Mukherjee said that on one hand Ms. Banerjee wants public-private participation in the Railways and on the other she is opposing reforms in other sectors of the government. He, it seems that, was trying to expose her of her double standards.

Mr. Singhvi has however brushed off the concerns that these differences are creating divisions in the UPA. He said that the cabinet discusses matters frankly and with decent however the decisions taken are the final decisions of the government of India.

In another development, the Union home minister P Chidambaram has said on Friday that her cabinet colleague Mamata Banerjee was not soft on Maoists.

"Mamata Banerjee has not been soft on Maoists. She condemns their violence and attacks on railway properties," he said in an event organized by the Indian Women Press Corps.
