Congress plans to raise ceiling on LPG on Rahul’s appeal

Congress plans to raise ceiling on LPG on Rahul’s appealCongress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi will appeal to the government to raise the ceiling of the subsidised LPG cylinders from six to ten, a Congress leader said.

Speaking on the condition of anonymity, the Congress leader said that Rahul will convey his concerns that six cylinders of cooking gas per year are just inadequate for a household.

Speaking on the topic, the leader said, "He is likely to issue an appeal to raise the ceiling of the subsidised LPG cylinders from 6 to 10 to protect 80 per cent of the consumers."

Last week, the union government capped the maximum number of subsidised LPG cylinders at six per year per household, in a move that encountered severe criticism from the BJP-led Opposition as well as Congress' allies like Samajwadi Party and Trinamool Congress.

The leader said the Congress was contemplating a partial roll-back on the decision on LPG, but insisted that the government was not under any pressure from Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee or the Opposition.

The government's own committee, headed by Unique Identification Authority of India, on the subsidies said in its report that 80 per cent of households use ten cook gas cylinders per year.
