DCT scheme to be rolled out only in districts where preparations are fool-proof

DCT scheme to be rolled out only in districts where preparations are fool-proofThe Government will roll out its much-talked about Direct Cash Transfer (DCT) Scheme only in those districts and for only those schemes where preparations are fool-proof, a senior finance ministry official said.

As per the Government's declared plans, the ambitious scheme will be implemented in 51 districts across the country, from January 1, 2013.

But, the finance ministry official said, "The rollout would be in only those districts and for only those schemes for which preparations are fool-proof. As of now, we have identified 51 districts and 39 schemes, but these are not final."

The direct cash transfer scheme has been designed to provide subsidies to the targeted beneficiaries by transferring money to their Aadhaar-based bank accounts.

Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram will pay visits to some selected districts to monitor the preparations for the first roll out of the scheme.

In December last year, the scheme had been started in Alwar district of Rajasthan on a pilot basis, where many beneficiaries had been complaining about non-receipt of subsidies.

As less than two weeks are left for the roll out of the scheme, the government is now fast-tracking the process of identification and registration of beneficiaries for the 34 schemes by setting up camps to collect details.

The scheme aims to cover 18 states of the country by April next year.
