DGCA can cancel Kingfisher Airlines' licence today

DGCA can cancel Kingfisher Airlines' licence todayThe licence of beleaguered Kingfisher Airlines can be cancelled today as the carrier has failed to come up with a viable financial revival plan, sources said.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) had asked Kingfisher to respond to a show-cause notice by October 20. The regulator had asked the carrier to explain why its licence should not be suspended or cancelled. But the carrier failed to reply to the questions raised by the aviation regulator.

The carrier has requested the regulator to it give it more time, but all option are open to the regulator, including suspending or cancelling the licence.

Kingfisher has not operated a single flight since October 1, as it failed to settle disputes with employees over the non-payment of salaries. It may be noted here that Kingfisher employees have not received salaries for more than seven months.

Several discussions between the management and representatives of employees have failed as employees are not ready to resume work until all dues are paid and assurance is given that salaries will be paid on time.

Kingfisher currently has merely ten operational aircraft, as compared with sixty-six planes a year ago.

The Vijay Mallya-promoted carrier is currently burdened under a debt pile of Rs. 7,524 crore. Its accumulated operating loss has jumped above Rs. 8,000-crore mark.
