Digitalization of DD and AIR gets government nod

doordarshanThe Government of India has approved the digitalization program of Doordarshan (DD) and All India Radio (AIR).

The two state-owned broadcasters will get an amount of around Rs. 1,500 crore from the government to go ahead with the process. Private operators have become a challenge for the duo now.

In order to compete with these private companies, the Cabinet Committee on Infrastructure (CCI) has approved the proposal of the Ministry of Broadcasting regarding for digitization.

This recommendation was made during the 11th Plan. Transmitters, studio connectivity and network for the new technology will be made digital as per the scheme.

After the CCI meeting, Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni informed that this process will provide higher quality to AIR and Doordarshan signals, making them accessible to the remotest part of India.

In a way this will provide a chance to the most vulnerable section of the society to come and be a part of the main stream Moreover, the viewers of DD will have more options to choose from as more channels can now get added in the list.

Rs. 920 crore has been earmarked for digitalization process of All India Radio. Doordarshan will receive Rs. 620 crore for this program.
