eBay India to set market platform for mobile phonesEBay India, a subsidiary of US-based Internet marketplace major eBay Inc., has come up with a plan to create a marketplace platform for mobile phones.

The company has been talking with the telecommunication companies and the mobile manufacturers to launch the service with the introduction of 3G service in India.

Other than this service, eBay is also planning to commence operations in the new services like second-hand car sales to consumers, ticket sales and shopping comparison services in India. The company has planned to launch its mobile platform and online marketplace for sales of the second hand cars by 2010.

While addressing to the reporters, the director of eBay India, Mr. Kashyap Vadapalli said, “Since there are only 45-50 million internet users in India and there is poor broadband connectivity, these are impediments for online shopping. That way, mobile phone has a far wider reach."

The eBay deals in B2B marketplace for second-hand vehicles in India, has planned to roll out a separate version for B2C market in India, as the company already has a B2C platform in US and Germany.

The company has further plans to start its other globally popular specialty online marketplaces in India, which includes StubHub, for selling tickets for movie, theatres and events and Shopping. com, which provides online price comparison.

The ecommerce market in India is evaluated at Rs 9500 crore, out of which pure play online shopping market accounts for Rs 1,300 crore. As compared to the growth of 8-10% in the online shopping all over the world, India has registered a growth of 30%.
