Fashion for a cause

HDIL India Couture WeekSo, the duo Abu Jani & Sandip Khosla (much to my surprise and much left to desire to the professionalism in the fashion design world) backed out of the HDIL India Couture Week. But, as they say, life has to go on... And it did.

Much has been talked about the ‘fashion for a cause’ in this industry for many years. Somehow, our fashion people never really cared to loosen their purse strings when it comes to charity or cause in the past. Celebrities such as actor Salman Khan will make a difference here. He’s auctioning his art collection and expensive watches and putting the proceeds in his charity ‘Being Human’ and setting an example for the rest.

Perhaps that’s why at his charity showing ‘Being Human’ emotions overpowered the style quotient and people realised that fashion can after all be the cause of some good deed. The show was as overwhelming as it was stylish with actors Aamir Khan, Sanjay Dutt, Akshay Kumar, Sohail Khan, Govinda, Ajay Devgan, Saif Ali Khan and Katrina Kaif walking the runway with Salman and a few children. The crowd was ecstatic. The models in between came displaying some stylish outfits by Rohit Gandhi & Rahul Khanna, Ashish Soni, Gavin Miguel, Kunal Rawal etc. “What’s money after a point unless you can put the same into some good use?” Salman said back stage before the show began. “There are enough needy people outside and if we can do something to help them. We have then achieved something.” The entire proceeds from the sale of these merchandise will go to the Being Human charity. On this count, I think the HDIL India Couture Week served some purpose.

On Tuesday, Pallavi Jaikishen showcased embellished garments, meant for festive occasions. On Monday, the show was devoted to high-end jewellery by Queenie Dhody, Farah Khan, Maheep Kapoor and Devaunshi Mehta. Models came in Raakesh Aggarwval, Gauri & Nainika, Ana Singh and Sureili Goel’s creations. Of the lot, I thought what really scored in terms of complete look were Queeni’s and Farah’s.
