FCC pushes for gigabit speed broadband deployment in all US states by 2015

FCC pushes for gigabit speed broadband deployment in all US states by 2015Issuing a `Gigabit City Challenge' call on Friday, Federal Communications Commission (FCC)'s Chairman Julius Genachowski said that gigabit speed broadband services should be made available in all the US states by the year 2015.

Asserting the challenge for bringing gigabit Ethernet speeds to all US states in the coming two- to three-year period, Genachowski said that the FCC wants that, by 2015, the objective of deploying gigabit Ethernet speeds in at least one community in each state should be accomplished.

Calling on the municipal leaders as well as service providers to come together for the `gigabit speed broadband deployment' objective, Genachowski said that communities that participate in the `Gigabit City Challenge, will end up turning themselves into innovation hubs which would facilitate the creation of valuable jobs for their residents.

In a statement linked to the `Gigabit City Challenge' call, Genachowski said that the investment involved in deploying and delivering broadband at 1Gbps speed will be well worth it because it will eventually lead to innovation.

Drawing attention to the fact that the US requires "a critical mass of gigabit communities nationwide," Genachowski said that gigabit speed broadband will help innovators develop "next-generation applications and services that will drive economic growth and global competitiveness."
