Flood Toll In Punjab, Haryana Rises To 51Six days after Rekha Gohil (27) gave birth to a baby on the pavement after being turned away by a civic maternity home at Mahim, the municipal corporation suspended a physician and a senior nurse until pending inquiry gets completed.

Rekha's husband, Kishorilal, who works a conservancy worker with the ward office in Dadar, said, "We are thankful to the civic authorities that they took our complaint seriously."

Dr. G. T. Ambe, Executive health officer, said, "We are still conducting a detailed investigation as to what were the circumstances under which they were turned away. Until the inquiry is completed they have asked them not to report to work."

The role of other employees is also being queried.

On Monday, Kishorilal took his 8-month pregnant wifey to the hospital after she had labor pains.

The doctors checked Rekha and told him to get her admitted to Sion Hospital as it was a untimely delivery.

While Gohil went to bring a cab, his wife gave birth to a girl on the pavement.

Rekha has a low hemoglobin count and is feeble, but her infant has gained 500 gm since their admission to Sion hospital. (With Inputs from Agencies)
