Foreign retailers will eventually hike prices and loot the people: Sushma Swaraj

Foreign retailers will eventually hike prices and loot the people: Sushma SwarajThe fiery debate over the government's controversial decision to open India's retail sector to foreign investors is still going on.

Senior BJP leader Sushma Swaraj, who is also the leader of Opposition in the lower house, criticized the Congress-led UPA government's decision saying it would let foreign companies liked Wal-Mart to control the supply of food products, and introduce voracious pricing policy.

Debating over the issue in parliament, she said, "At first, they will introduce such prices that will finish the rest of the market. Then when the customer has no other choice, they will keep hiking prices and looting the people."

Swaraj added that she would appeal to all parties opposed to bill to vote against the bill and defeat FDI in retail sector.

The voting will be non-binding, but a defeat would be very embarrassing for the Congress-led coalition government, which is already under intense pressure to annul the controversial reforms programme.

Congress leaders argued that the economic reforms were necessary to provide a boost to the economy, which will this year report the slowest pace of growth in the last ten years.

The government in September allowed foreign investors to invest up to 51 per cent in the domestic retail sector. Although state government have been given the right to deny foreign retailers' entry in their states.
