Gartner and IDC peg Lenovo or HP as top global PC manufacturer in Q3

Gartner and IDC peg Lenovo or HP as top global PC manufacturer in Q3On Wednesday, two of the leading market research firms, Gartner and IDC, came up with clashing reports about the PC market-leader in the third quarter; with the Gartner saying that Lenovo was the top-ranking PC manufacturer worldwide, and IDC pegging Hewlett-Packard (HP) as the No. 1 global PC manufacturer.

According to Gartner's report, the worldwide PC market share of Lenovo surpassed that of HP during third quarter; with Lenovo shipping a total of nearly 13.8 million PC units vis-a-vis the 13.6 million PC units shipped by HP.

In addition, Gartner also said that the 15.7 percent global PC market share of Lenovo marked a 13.1 percent increase over the last year same quarter figures; while HP's market share during the mentioned quarter plunged to 15.5 percent from last year's 17.0 percent.

Meanwhile, presenting a contrasting picture, IDC has reported that HP retained its top position in the global PC market during the third quarter also, with the company shipping approximately 13.9 million PC units to grab a notable 15.9 percent share of the market; as against Lenovo's shipments of 13.8 million units, for its 15.7 percent market share.

However, even though the Gartner and IDC reports underscore a discrepancy in terms of which of the two companies - Lenovo or HP - was the top seller of PC across the world, both the firms showed a consensus in maintaining that third-quarter shipments of PC units witnessed a plunge for five leading PC makers in the world, except Lenovo and Asus.
