Mystery Hong Kong dog killer starts poisoning cats as well

Hong Kong  - A mystery dog poisoner who has killed scores of Hong Kong pet dogs over the past 20 years has begun targeting cats, animal welfare experts warned Monday.

The body of a ginger and white cat was found last week off Bowen Road in Hong Kong's Mid Levels district, the regular haunt of the poisoner who lays tainted meat and has evaded capture for two decades.

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) said the dead pet it was found by police close to where a jogger had reported seeing suspicious pieces of meat the same day.

The 2-year-old girl and her uncle were both found dead at the foot of the block of flats in the city's Sheung Shui district after falling from a ninth-floor balcony on Saturday morning.

The girl's mother told police that her husband's brother snatched the girl and threw her from the balcony before jumping to his death. Police believe he may have suffered a mental breakdown.

Malaysian police seize 45 million dollars worth of drugs in 2008Kuala Lumpur - Malaysian police seized illegal drugs valued at 149 million ringgit (45.15 million dollars) in 2008, double the amount seized the year before, a news report said Saturday.

The police narcotics department also seized 38 million ringgit (11.5 million dollars) worth of goods and cash from drug syndicates, including seizing four boats, a piece of property, jewelry and 228 vehicles, director Zul Hasnan Najib Baharuddin said.

The tip was posted late Thursday at a discussion forum of www. tijuanapress. com. The content of the message suggested links to organized crime.

Police found the bodies wrapped in plastic, while the heads were in a black bag. The victims, believed to be between 20 and 40 years old, were not immediately identified.
