Government posts third advance estimate of crops production

crops production The government's third advance estimate of production of grain crops for the year ending June, posted on its official website on Tuesday, has been revised upwards by 0.9 percent to 229.85 million tonnes from the earlier 227.88 million tones estimates in February.

While the production of wheat has been anticipated a wee bit lower than the 77.78 million tonnes February estimates to 77.63 million tones; rice production has been revised to up from 98.89 million tonnes to 99.37 million tones.

Generally, the third advance estimate happens to be much closer to the final figures, due to the fact that it takes into consideration not only the harvested crop of both Rabi and Kharif production, but also the market arrivals of the merchandise.

During the 2007-08 crop season, the country's record wheat and rice figures stood at 78.57 million tonnes and 96.69 million tonnes respectively.

In another downward revision, the estimated production of pulses has been lowered to 14.18 million tonnes from the second advance estimates of 14.25 million tonnes. However, with the upward revision of production of coarse cereals, the estimates have risen from the previous 36.96 million tonnes to 38.67 million tonnes.

For the 2007-08 season production of pulses stood at 14.76 million tonnes, while that of coarse cereals was 40.76 million tonnes.
