Gunmen kill army brigadier, driver in Pakistani capital

Gunmen kill army brigadier, driver in Pakistani capital Islamabad  - Gunmen opened fire on a military vehicle in Pakistan's capital city on Thursday, killing a brigadier and his driver, police said.

The attackers, who were riding a motorbike, ambushed the marked jeep just before 9 am (0300 GMT) on the fringes of an upmarket residential neighbourhood in Islamabad, a duty officer at the local police station said.

Another soldier in the vehicle was wounded in the attack.

Television footage showed the jeep with around a dozen bullet holes in its windscreen.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.

The ambush was the latest assault on a military target after the Pakistani security forces launched an offensive Saturday against the Taliban in the South Waziristan region which borders Afghanistan.

It was the second attack this week in Islamabad, where two suicide bombers blew themselves up in an Islamic university on Tuesday, killing seven people and wounding nearly two dozen more. (dpa)
