China to test clothes for cancer-causing chemicals
Shanghai, June 25 : Children's clothes in Shanghai will now be tested for cancer-causing chemicals, after parents showed concern about the quality of clothes currently on sale.
Textile experts said heavy metals may be found in buttons and dyes of such items.
Now, a new standard would regulate the levels of five types of heavy metal - antimony, cadmium, chromium, cobalt and nickel in children's clothes.
The regulation has been drafted by the National Garments Quality Inspection and Supervision Centre, the Shanghai Daily reported.
Authorities said once the new standard becomes valid, tests will be included in their regular inspections.
The regulation was ordered after parents became worried about the quality of baby clothes sold in the city.
"I suspect clothes I bought for my son from online stores contain heavy metals, as the government never tested for these items before," said Zhang Qian, a mother of a two-year-old boy.(IANS)
