Child virus death toll hits 28; WHO backs China's controls

Beijing - The death toll from a virally transmitted hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD) that has infected 16,000 children rose to 28 on Wednesday as the World Health Organization said it was satisfied with China's efforts to curb the spread of the virus.

"China has the capacity, both at the central and local level, to control this disease," Hans Troedsson, the WHO representative in China, told reporters.

Troedsson said Chinese health ministry measures to improve surveillance, raise public awareness and educate health workers were "already starting to have effect".

Toll in hand, foot and mouth outbreak in Chinese city rises to 21

Beijing - Hand, Foot and Mouth DiseaseThe death of another child brought the death toll from an outbreak of hand, foot and mouth disease in an eastern Chinese city to 21 as nearly 3,000 children have been infected, the official news agency Xinhua reported Friday.

Gao Kaiyan, director of the Anhui Provincial Health Department, told Xinhua that 2,946 children had been sickened as of Friday morning in Fuyang in Anhui province.

Hand, foot and mouth infections rise to 1,884 in Chinese city

Beijing - Hand, Foot and Mouth infectionsThe number of infections has risen to at least 1,884 in an outbreak of hand, foot and mouth disease that has killed 20 children in an eastern Chinese city, the official news agency Xinhua reported Wednesday.

However, no new deaths have been reported in the past five days in Fuyang in Anhui province, the Chinese Centre for Disease Control and Prevention told the agency.

Singapore teachers join cleaners as outbreak toll rises

Some preschools, childcare centres shut amid outbreak

Another seven preschools and six childcare centres in Singapore have been asked to voluntarily close for 10 days as the number of cases soars, health official said Wednesday.
