The curious case of twins in a Chinese village  Beijing, Nov 17 : Believe it or not, a remote village in China has set an amazing record of birth of 98 sets of twins in the past half a century.

The phenomenon is being attributed to a local legend that says pregnant women who gave birth to twins drank water from a village well in Heshan village in the Changde City area in Hunan province, the People's Daily reported.

Insect bites kill seven in China

A total of 156 people in Shandong province have been bitten by ticks, the Shanghai Daily reported citing provincial health authorities.

Infection from tick bites reduces white blood cell and platelet counts in the blood, leading to organ failure and death.

1,600 Chinese die of infectious diseasesBeijing, Sep 10 : Around 1,600 people died of infectious diseases in China in August, the ministry of health said Friday.

A total of 1,535 people died due to diseases like viral hepatitis, tuberculosis, dysentery, syphilis and gonorrhoea. There were around 340,000 such cases reported from across the country in August, Xinhua reported citing a ministry statement.

According to provincial health authorities, the 18 victims were among 557 reported cases of suspected human granulocytic anaplasmosis (HGA) since May 2007.


Book on Chinese patent medicines soon

MedicinesBeijing, July 19 : Over 9,000 traditional medicines made from Chinese herbs will soon have a textbook that will provide details on each one of them.

The medicines, including pills, capsules, and ointments will be detailed in a book titled "Proper Use of Traditional Chinese Patent Medicine", the Beijing Huimin Health and Medical Development Foundation said.

Baby with throat slit found in trash canBeijing, April 15 - A newborn baby with his throat slit has been found in a trash can in China's Guangdong province, a media report said Thursday.

The baby, who is in a critical condition, remains on a respirator at a hospital in Sanshui district in Guangdong, China Daily reported.

"The baby is not yet out of danger, despite a successful operation that lasted for more than two hours," a doctor named Li was quoted as saying Wednesday.


Have pre-marriage health check: Chinese official

Health CheckBeijing, March 12 : Pre-marriage health check-ups should be held as there has been an increase in the congenital defect rate among new born babies, a Chinese official said here Friday.

Wang Yin, deputy to the National People's Congress, said that following the cancellation of compulsory pre-marriage check-ups in 2003, now less people took health checks before getting married and the congenital defect rate of new born babies was on the rise.


Latest Chinese tests find 12 per cent of milk products tainted

Beijing - Chinese authorities found an industrial chemical contaminating 12 per cent of dairy samples in the latest of a series of tests it is conducting after tainted milk products began sickening babies, a news report said Wednesday.

The latest tests showed 31 of 265 batches of dairy products tested contained melamine, the official Xinhua news agency reported.

President Hu Jintao vowed the government would provide better oversight of the dairy industry on a visit to two dairy firms in east-central China.


Fourth baby dies as China arrests 12 more over milk scandal

Beijing  - A fourth baby has died after being fed contaminated milk powder in China and police have detained 12 more suspects involved in the scandal, which has sickened more than 6,200 infants, the government said on Thursday.

The latest reported death was in China's Central Asian region of Xinjiang, the regional health authority reported on its website without giving details.

Another 86 babies in Xinjiang were sickened by consuming milk powder tainted with the industrial chemical melamine, the department said.


Two Chinese babies dead after consuming tainted milk powder

Beijing, Sept. 15 : Two Chinese infants have died after consuming contaminated milk powder.

A Xinhua report said that they were 1,253 babies infected with kidney stones after taking contaminated milk powders.

Health Ministry sources were quoted by the agency as saying that most of the infections occurred in Hebei, Jiangsu and Gansu provinces.

The two deaths took place in Gansu Province, they added.

Among the 1,253 infected, 53 babies are still in a critical state, while 340 were receiving treatment in various hospitals.
