Book on Chinese patent medicines soon

MedicinesBeijing, July 19 : Over 9,000 traditional medicines made from Chinese herbs will soon have a textbook that will provide details on each one of them.

The medicines, including pills, capsules, and ointments will be detailed in a book titled "Proper Use of Traditional Chinese Patent Medicine", the Beijing Huimin Health and Medical Development Foundation said.

Beijing, April 21 - Chinese health officials Wednesday found excessive degree of harmful bacteria in the sample of the milk which caused food poisoning to more than 200 school children two days ago.

The milk contained excessive degrees of E. coli and other bacteria, officials said.

Samples of the milk supplied to schools in Xunyang county of Shaanxi province in northwest China, were tested and found to have a bacterium density of 16,400 per gram of milk, exceeding the limit of 10 in per gram, said Zhang Jiman, director of a laboratory of the county disease control centre.

Beijing - Authorities made a fist arrest in the evolving scandal over melamine-contaminated eggs, a Chinese news report said.

Melamine, a toxic chemical used for producing plastics and fertilizers, which was previously detected in Chinese milk and dairy products, was detected in eggs in Hong Kong earlier this week.

Investigators believe chicken feed spiked with melamine to boost protein levels is responsible for the contamination and arrested the manager of a feed producer in the province Liaoning, the Xinjingbai daily reported.

Beijing - Officials in a rural county of south-western China's Yunnan province ordered the culling of more than 11,000 dogs after rabies killed six people, state media said on Sunday.

Of the more than 90,000 dogs in Yunnan's Mi'le county, some 84,000 had been vaccinated against rabies and another 11,500 unprotected dogs were culled, the Beijing News quoted local media as saying.

Philippine tests clear 18 meat products imported from China

Manila - Philippine health authorities found no traces of contamination in 18 Chinese meat products being sold in the country, a senior health official said Saturday.

Health Secretary Francisco Duque said all 18 Chinese-made meat products tested by the Bureau of Food and Drugs were negative for the industrial chemical melamine.

He said the bureau would issue a full list of the products Monday.

The tests were conducted after four babies were killed and more than 50,000 hospitalized in China for consuming melamine-tainted infant formula.

Vietnam finds four more melamine tainted products

Hanoi - Vietnamese laboratories have found melamine in three dairy products imported from Singapore and a milk powder imported from New Zealand, raising the number of melamine-tainted products found in the country to 27, health officials said Thursday.

Nguyen Hung Long, deputy director of Vietnam's Food Hygiene and Safety Agency, said the importing companies had reported the melamine contamination themselves.

The three Singaporean products are Pokka Melon Milk, Pokka Cappuccino Coffee and Milk Coffee Europe, made by Singapore's Pokka Corporation.

Tainted milk chemical found in Heinz baby food in Hong Kong

Hong Kong - The industrial chemical that has contaminated Chinese milk supplies has been found in Heinz baby food in Hong Kong, officials said Saturday.

Melamine was found in samples of Heinz DHA plus AA Vegetable Formula Cereal in tests by the Hong Kong Centre for Food Safety on food imported from China.

The amount detected in the sample was 1.6 milligrams per kilogram, the centre said, compared to a newly introduced legal limit of 1 milligram per kilogram.
