Beijing, Sept. 25 : Chinese authorities ordered a cover-up of a tainted milk scandal that has poisoned tens of thousands of babies because they feared social unrest if the news was made public, The Daily Telegraph has learned.

Senior officials gave the order to Sanlu, the firm whose poisoned milk powder is said to be responsible for at least four deaths and illness in almost 53,000 infants.

It was passed on during three meetings at which the company told officials in the city of Shijiazhuang, where the company is based, of the extent of the crisis.

Hanoi - Vietnamese consumers are avoiding milk after local authorities found 18 tons of Chinese milk containing toxic melamine in Ho Chi Minh City, a senior Health Ministry official said Tuesday.

"We found 1,494 packages of milk, equivalent to 18 tons, produced by the YiLi Industrial Group of Inner Mongolia and imported to Vietnam by the Kim An company in Ho Chi Minh City," said Nguyen Hung Long, deputy director of the Food and Hygiene Department of the Health Ministry.

18 clinics set up to treat Hong Kong children in milk scare

New Delhi, Sep 22: The Chinese Health Ministry has said that the number of children sickened by tainted milk products has doubled, with nearly 12,900 in hospital and 104 of them seriously ill.

The sick children consumed milk made from milk powder, most of it produced by the Shijiazhuang Sanlu Group, the ministry said in a statement posted on its website on Sunday. It said 12,892 children have been hospitalised.

Beijing  - A fourth baby has died after being fed contaminated milk powder in China and police have detained 12 more suspects involved in the scandal, which has sickened more than 6,200 infants, the government said on Thursday.

The latest reported death was in China's Central Asian region of Xinjiang, the regional health authority reported on its website without giving details.

Hong Kong  - Milk products containing melamine, which has killed four babies in China and made 6,000 other babies ill, have been found on sale in Hong Kong, health officials announced Thursday.

The industrial chemical was found in eight samples of imported milk products from China tested by Hong Kong's Centre for Food Safety, which tested a total of 30 samples.

All of the milk products were supplied by the Yili Group and have been withdrawn from sale in Hong Kong. There are no reports of affected babies in the city of 6.9 million.

Taipei  - Taiwan on Wednesday banned the import of dairy products manufactured by 22 Chinese firms effective immediately, days after it barred the importation of a tainted Chinese baby formula linked to at least three infant deaths in China.

It also announced a list of 17 Taiwan firms that have imported Chinese dairy products in the past nine months for public reference so consumers could decide whether to buy products from them, officials said.
