IMD: South-west monsoon progresses further

MonsoonAccording to the Friday reports from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the south-west monsoon progressed further in the Arabian Sea, indicating favorable conditions for the onset of monsoon over Kerala in two days - that is, by May 25 - marking a six day-advancement over the normal date.

In its press release concerning the onset of the monsoon, IMD said: "With favorable conditions, the monsoon has advanced over some parts of the south Arabian Sea, some more parts of the south Bay of Bengal and some parts of the east-central Bay of Bengal, on Friday."

Weather scientists also said that the low pressure area forming over Bay of Bengal on May 23 was likely to intensify into a cyclone in the coming three days, and could spell harm for farmers in the country's peninsular areas.

As such, about three days after the onset, there would possibly be a lull in the rainfall with the low pressure area sucking away moisture from the region, and causing abatement in the monsoon over peninsular India.

However, the monsoon would soon revive in June first week, thanks to as active Madden Julian Oscillation (MJO) - a periodical wave that transits east Africa into the southwest Indian Ocean and the north Indian Ocean. In case the MJO fails to work, the lull in the rainfall would get longer!
