India strikes Gold at Commonwealth

Gagan NarangThe Commonwealth games are slated to begin in New Delhi later this year but the Commonwealth shooting championship has already begun in Tuglakabad at the Karni Singh Range. The start to this championship has already brought good news for Indian shooting fans when the duo of Gagan Narang and PT Raghunath won gold in the 10m Air Rifle pairs on Friday.

Another gold medal in the 25 m air rifle category was added in the kitty when Anisa Sayyed and Anurag Singh won on this category. India also had silver in their kitty when Virat Singh and Bapu Vanjare won in the 50 m air rifle category.

A solid start was provided by Narang and Raghunath who scored a deadly 599 and 594 out of 600 at the event where top shooters from 12 nations will battle for honors. A 43 member squad had been named by the Natinal Rifle Associations of India (NRAI)

Olympic champion Abhinav Bindra, Olympic silver medalist Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore were absent from the tournament and also India lacked the seasoned trap shooters Mansher Singh and Anwer Sultan, the world championship finalist Avneet Kaur Sidhu and pistol shooters Heena Sidhu and Harveen Srao and the record holder Ranjan Sodhi.
