Jaitley reviews security situation with service chiefs

Arun-JaitleyNew Delhi, Aug 26 : Defence Minister Arun Jaitley met the three service chiefs on Tuesday to review the security situation across the country amid continued ceasefire violations by Pakistani troops along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir.

Army Chief General Dalbir Singh Suhag, Air Chief Arup Raha and Navy Chief Admiral R K Dhowan reportedly discussed the steps required to be taken by the armed forces to tackle the situation.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh also had a meeting with heads of security and intelligence agencies on the issue on Monday.

Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of India and Pakistan had contacted each other over the hotline on Tuesday and agreed to increase the frequency of flag meetings to down scale the ceasefire violations occurring along the 778-kilometer-long Line of Control (LoC) and the 198-kilometer-long International Border (IB) in Jammu and Kashmir.

There have been 96 ceasefire violations along the LoC this year. There were 92 around the same period last year. What has raised eyebrows in defence and government cricles in India is the huge escalation in the cross-border firing along the IB, which is a settled border manned by the Border Security Force (BSF).

The DGMOs had last contacted each other in December last year. (ANI)
