Kolkata, April 16 : The house of pioneering scientist Jagadish Chandra Bose here will be restored and converted into a museum to inspire young people and make them aware about his contributions to the field of science, an official said here Tuesday.

"Our aim is to ignite young minds and make them aware about the contributions of Bose. The concept of a house museum is to bring to light the life and times of J. C. Bose and highlight his persona," G. M. Kapur, state convenor of the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (Intach), told IANS.

Bose, a pioneer of studies in plant physiology, radio and microwaves, conducted many of his experiments at the Presidency College (now Presidency University) and his residence Acharya Bhavan.

Cradled between Rajabajar Science College and Bose Institute, the 110-year-old red building No. 93 on the city's A. P. C. Road is the very place where Bose conducted his path-breaking studies on plant stimuli and the milestone experiments on radio and microwaves.

Intach in collaboration with Australian heritage trust Aus-Heritage, under the ministry of culture, will design galleries and preserve the scientist's bedroom, living room, study, kitchen, laboratory, dark room and library.

"We have done all the inventory and gallery designing. It will take around 18 months to restore the house," Kapur said.

The building houses the famed crescograph - an instrument invented by Bose to measure plant growth - which will also be put on display.

The areas and items to be restored include the walls displaying murals by noted painter Nandalal Bose, intricately carved teak wood ceilings that have been damaged by water and the balcony where the scientist used to have discussions with poet Rabindranath Tagore.

"This will be an audio-visual experience for youngsters. Everything related to his work on radio waves will be showcased. It will take them back on a journey to his life. Not many are aware of his contributions," Kapur said.

The J. C. Bose Trust, founded by the scientist in 1931, six years before his death in 1937, looks after the building and will collaborate with Intach for the project. Bose was born Nov 30, 1858.(IANS)
