KFC planning major expansion in IndiaFast food giant, Yum Brands Inc, which runs the popular KFC outlets, has said that it is planning to expand the brand's presence in country by focusing on second-tier markets after it flooded major cities with KFC stores.

The company said that it is aiming at generating $1 billion in system sales and expanding to 1,000 stores by the year, 2015. The company, which also owns other popular chains including Pizza Hut and Taco Bell, is optimistic about its plans for India.

Niren Chaudhary, president of Yum's India operations said that favourable demographics will make India a major market for the company. He said that the estimates showed that India will emerge the largest consuming class in the world, ahead of China and the US. He added that the median age in India is 28 years, which will also contribute to the attractiveness of the market.

Yum Brands has been present in the country since 1990s and has established a strong presence in large cities like Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore. The company reported that it had 593 KFCs and Pizza Huts in India as on December, 2012. The company also said that its India system sales rose 29 per cent over the previous year while same-store sales grew 5 per cent.

Company generates $350 million in annual system sales in the country per year, which makes up about 3 per cent of its global sales. However, the company attached huge importance to the country and has classified it as a separate division along with China and the US in its financial reports.
