Special goggles, telescopes - Lucknow set for solar eclipse

Lucknow, Jan 15 - Scientific institutions and schools in Lucknow have made elaborate arrangements - from acquiring special goggles to installing telescopes - for people to watch the annular solar eclipse Friday.

The Indira Gandhi Planetarium has purchased as many as 6,500 special goggles and installed several telescopes so that people can view the eclipse.

"We have made enough arrangements to watch the solar eclipse. Only 51.12 percent of the eclipse will be visible in Lucknow," Anil Yadav, officer-in-charge of the planetarium, told IANS Friday.

BSP wins remaining seats in Uttar Pradesh council poll

Lucknow, Jan 14 : The ruling Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) won all the three remaining seats of the Uttar Pradesh legislative council, counting for which was held Thursday.

Even as the Election Commission was yet to announce the results for the three seats - Aligarh, Meerut-Ghaziabad, and Bulandshahr, sources in the poll panel said all the three seats went to the BSP, taking its total to 34.

Re-polling for the three seats took place Wednesday after some complaints were registered with the Election Commission.

Uttar Pradesh panchayat forces woman to ill-treat her lover

Lucknow, Jan 14 : Unwilling to accept their love affair, an Uttar Pradesh village panchayat forced a woman to slap her lover with shoes and tonsure his head. Later, after blackening the man's face, the panchayat paraded him semi-naked through various localities in the village, police said Thursday.

The order came Wednesday from the panchayat of Aaldi village in Muzaffarnagar, about 350 km from Lucknow, where the 22-year-old woman was forced to abuse her 26-year-old lover in full public view.

Insurance firm manager found dead in Ghaziabad

Ghaziabad, Jan 14 - The body of an insurance company manager was found lying in a drain in Ghaziabad Thursday, police said.

Deepak Teotia, 30, a manager with HDFC Standard Life, was found dead in Raj Nagar District Centre (RDC).

According to police, Teotia had been having a drink near a liquor shop Wednesday evening with his colleagues Reby John and Narendra Sharma. All of them left for their homes at around 11 p. m.

Mayawati offers Rs.5 crore to Indian hockey team

Lucknow, Jan 14 - Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati Thursday offered Rs. 5 crore to the Indian hockey team, along with a sponsorship for the next two years, a day after the crisis between the players and Hockey India ended.

The players had marched out of the preparatory camp in Pune for this year's World Cup over non payment of dues.

"Besides giving a sum of Rs. 5 crore to the Indian hockey team, we are also ready to take care of the sponsorship of the team for the next two years," Mayawati said here.

Uttar Pradesh woman injured in chapati blast

Lucknow, Jan 14 - In a bizarre incident, a woman in Uttar Pradesh suffered burn injuries on her face, hands and midriff when the chapati she was making exploded, police said Thursday.

The incident took place Wednesday in Ramgarh of Ferozabad district, some 300 km from Lucknow, when Rubina was making chapatis in her kitchen.

Rubina is being treated at a Ferozabad hospital and she is out of danger, police said.
