Mayawati blames central government for price rise

Lucknow, Jan 14 - Lashing out at Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar for the recent rise in food prices, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati Thursday said wrong policies of the central government had helped "blackmarketeers and hoarders".

"The government is working under pressure of black-marketeers. Prices are rising due to the anti-poor policies of the central government," Mayawati told reporters here.

The NGO Raunak Evam Jagruk Samaj Sanstha (REJSS) in Sonbhadra district, some 250 km from Lucknow, conducts recitation of the Ramayana epic in parts of Uttar Pradesh, holds prayers for Lord Ram and distributes saplings as prasad (consecrated offering) among the devotees.

BSP sweeps Uttar Pradesh council polls

Lucknow, Jan 13 : The ruling Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) made a clean sweep in the Uttar Pradesh legislative council polls, winning 31 of the 33 seats, counting for which was held Wednesday.

While the Election Commission is yet to declare the results officially, according to sources in the State Election Commission, of the 33 seats for which counting was held, the BSP won 31, the Congress and the Samajwadi Party (SP) could get only one seat each, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) could not even open its account.

Uttar Pradesh announces creation of a new commando force

Lucknow, Jan 13 : Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday unveiled its new commando force "Blue Hawks", which has been raised by the State police to tackle militants.

State Police Chief Karam Veer Singh inaugurated the basic induction course of the first Blue Hawks batch at the commando training school in Lucknow.

Forty-two commandos, who have completed a month-long attachment with Indian army in Agra, showcased their skills.

Mayawati's birthday with a difference - gifting monthly dole

Lucknow, Jan 13 - A monthly dole for Uttar Pradesh's poorest of the poor -- that is the ambitious scheme to be launched on Chief Minister Mayawati's 54th birthday, a day that has become notorious for her Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) celebrating it as a fund raising event.

But this Jan 15, Friday, will be different. Instead of getting flak for her party workers allegedly using the occasion to extort money, Mayawati will launch the Rs. 300 a month scheme for families living below the poverty line (BPL).
