Twitter refuses to reveal user information to UK police

Twitter refuses to reveal user information to UK police London, Jan 30 : Micro blogging platform Twitter has declined to reveal details of members to British police almost every time they have asked for them, it has emerged.

According to the firm's second biannual Transparency Report, despite a series of high profile cases involving so-called "trolling", computer hacking, harassment and abuse via anonymous accounts, Twitter provided information to investigators just once in the second half of last year.

It was the only time Twitter provided British authorities with information in full or in part, out of 25 requests.

In comparison, authorities in the United States asked for information about Twitter members on 815 occasions and received it in full or part in 562 cases, the Telegraph reports.

Twitter said it refused requests that did not relate to a specific account, were "overly broad" or when members challenged them.

According to law enforcement sources, its robust approach has caused frustration among investigators, the paper said.

Identifying anonymous Twitter members can be very difficult, particularly without the technical log data that the firm holds, the paper added. (ANI)
