Lebanon's former president Amin Gemayel hospitalized
Beirut - Lebanon's former president and current head of the Christian Phalange Party, Amin Gemayel, was admitted to the hospital Monday after falling ill.
Local radio said Gemayel, 67, was rushed to the hospital suffering from chest pains.
Gemayel's adviser, Salim Sayegh denied that the former president had a heart attack. "The former president is undergoing tests in hospital," he said on radio.
The Phalange Party's website also said Gemayel was undergoing routine medical tests and would play his "national role" as soon as possible.
Gemayel served as Lebanon's president from 1982 to 1988. The Phalange Party is part of an anti-Syrian parliamentary majority coalition.
The coalition is expected to run a tight race against the Hezbollah-led opposition in parliamentary elections on June 7. (dpa)
