Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal to declare his presidential plans on June 24

Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal will make a ‘major announcement’ regarding his 2016 presidential plans on June 24 in New Orleans.

According to Jindal’s adviser Timmy Teepell, the Governor has announced a campaign exploratory committee on May 18.

Jindal has earlier said that he would decide on whether to seek the Republican presidential nomination once the state legislature concludes its current session in June.

Jindal is a former congressman and a two-term governor. However, his popularity ratings in Louisiana have been low as the state's budget surplus has turned into a $1.6 billion deficit.

According to Jindal’s spokeswoman Shannon Bates, he is known as a ‘policy guy’. However, he has been working to court Christian conservatives.

Jindal's intention to look for the Republican nomination has been expected since he launched a presidential exploratory committee in May and paid visits to key primary states.

The Governor’s exploratory committee website complete with a red, white and blue logo in the shape of a ‘J’. The site asks, "We must fight to make sure the next generation is not the first generation to inherit fewer opportunities than their parents. Will you join me?”

Jindal wrote an op-ed piece in The New York Times in April, in which he mentioned that he is holding firm against gay marriage. He declared his support for religious freedom laws, such as the one in Indiana that sparked outrage among same-sex marriage supporters.

Jindal had earlier said he would decide on whether to seek the Republican presidential nomination once the state legislature concludes its current session in June.
