Major fire tragedy averted in Kanpur

22 killed as rain lashes northern India, flood toll tops 1,400 Kanpur, Sept 9 : Timely intervention of fire brigade averted a major tragedy in Kanpur as a major fire engulfed an electricity transformer in the city on Tuesday.

The fire soon engulfed the entire transformer and the cables at the sub-station located in a busy area of the city.

Around eight people were trapped inside the sub station at the time of fire, including employees of Kanpur Electricity Supply Corporation (KESCO).

Timely arrival of fire services averted a major tragedy in which several people could have lost their lives.

“We tried hard to control the fire. We reached on time. There were many people trapped inside who were saved,” said Munna Singh, a fire brigade officer.

Though no casualties were reported, the incident created panic in the area.

Faulty and worn out electric cables often lead to such incidents of fire in the country. (ANI)
