MP Congress blames state government for rising crime against women

s/Shivraj-Singh-ChouhanBhopal, Dec 26 : Members and supporters of the Congress party on Wednesday staged a protest against the Bharatiya Janata Party led Madhya Pradesh Government and alleged lawlessness in the state on Wednesday.

The protesters lashed out at Chief Minster Shivraj Singh Chouhan, saying crimes against women had increased because of poor governance in the state.

Protesters took to streets, scuffling with police who later baton charged them.

"The situation in the state is such that in a year almost 1,000 incidents of rape have come to light. In the last week, the rate of rape incidents has increased. The chief minister of Madhya Pradesh should resign from his post if crimes like these are perpetrated under his governance. He is answerable to the public as there is surge in crimes like rape and murders," said Manav Agarwal, Congress spokesperson for the state unit.

"In the past nine years, over 27,000 rape cases have come to light in the state. Over 56,000 women have been sexually harassed and 36,000 are reportedly missing. Almost nine women are raped on a daily basis out of which two are gang raped," said P C Sharma, a local Congress leader.

The protest comes in the wake of a rape of a 23-year-old woman who was beaten, raped and thrown out of a moving bus in New Delhi. The incident has triggered nationwide protests against such crimes. (ANI)
