Los Angeles  - Hollywood's biggest night is set to get a makeover. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Tuesday named two new producers for the 82nd annual Academy Awards.

Veteran studio executive Bill Mechanic will team with Hairspray director-choreographer Adam Shankman to helm the show. Shankman is a judge on the reality TV series So You Think You Can Dance.

Oscar watchers said the appointments signaled that the Academy wanted the awards show to continue along the same lines as February's telecast, when host Hugh Jackman led an evening of lavish song and dance numbers that saw US television ratings climb to 36.3 million viewers from a low of 32 million in 2008.

"The last time I was on the (Oscar) show was as a dancer, and to come back as a producer is such an unbelievable honour," Shankman said.

Mechanic, a former chief of FOX and Disney studios said that Shankman had "the perfect background and spirit to make the show both unique and fun to watch." (dpa)
