Excise duty concession on auto, consumer goods to continue: FM

Arun-JaitleyNew Delhi: In a relief to the automobile and consumer durable sectors, the government on Wednesday extended the excise duty concession by six months to December 31.

The government had cut excise duty on cars, SUVs and two-wheelers as well as consumer durables in the Interim Budget in February to help the industry tide over a demand slump.

The concessions were valid till June 30 and Finance Minister Arun Jaitley announced the extension till the year end.

Time to take steps to put economy on high-growth path: Jaitley

Arun-JaitleyNew Delhi: Faced with a "challenging" economy, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Tuesday said the time has come to take measures that will put the country on a faster pace of growth and restore investor confidence.

"With regard to the Finance Ministry...  This is a challenging time for it and it is challenging because in the last two years, the economy has moved at a slow pace...  Whatever steps have to be taken in this direction, this is the time for it and you will have to wait for this," said Jaitley, who is also Minister for Defence and Corporate Affairs.

Earlier on Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a high level meeting to take a decision on gas prices. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and Oil Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, who met Modi on Sunday, were in the Prime Minister's Office again on Monday to discuss possible tweaks to the Rangarajan price formula, under which the price of gas would rise to USD 8.8 from July from USD 4.2 currently.

Arun JaitleyNew Delhi: Keen to push insurance sector reforms, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley today met CEOs of private sector companies to discuss issues related to capital requirements, including cap on foreign direct investment.

Industry has been demanding raising FDI limit to 49 percent from 26 percent at present so that they get the much needed capital to enhance their business.

"We are talking... It is pre-budget discussion," Minister of State for Finance Nirmala Sitharaman, who was also present at the hour-long meeting, told reporters.

Arun-JaitleySrinagar, June 15 : Arun Jaitley on Sunday said that for Indo-Pak relations to normalise, violations along Line of Control (LoC) need to stop.

He said, "That itself is going to be a confidence-building measure before any country can proceed further."

Answering a question about the the United States of America's withdrawal from Afghanistan and Al-Qaeda reportedly setting its eyes on Kashmir, Jaitley said, "With our level of preparedness, even though I am confident and optimistic, there is an element of caution because of these kind of threats."

Arun-JaitleyNew Delhi: Finance Minister Arun Jaitley today said the government will stress on skill development so that a trained workforce can galvanise the economy, even as trade unions urged him not allow FDI in defence, railways and retail.

"Skill development will be given priority so that more and more trained workers enter the economy," according to an official statement after Jaitley met representatives of central trade unions.

Jaitley said the government would give "due consideration" to the 10-point joint charter of demands submitted by the unions during the pre-budget meeting.

Jaitley to visit aircraft carrier INS Viraat in Mumbai

NArun-Jaitleyew Delhi: Defence Minister Arun Jaitley will visit aircraft carrier INS Viraat in Mumbai on Saturday and review the operational preparedness of the Western Naval Command, which witnessed two major submarine mishaps in the last one year.

During his visit to the Western Command, the Defence Minister will also commission two fast-attack craft ICGS Achook and ICGS Agrim, of the Indian Coast Guard, Navy officials said here.

After taking charge, Jaitley has been busy with briefings by Defence Ministry officials and the chiefs of armed forces and is reviewing the functioning and performance of various departments.

RBI monetary policy aims at balancing growth, inflation: Jaitley

RBINew Delhi, June 4 - Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has described the RBI's second bi-monthly monetary policy as a calibrated approach aimed at striking a balance between growth and inflation.

The RBI has reduced the SLR ( statutory liquidity ratio ) by 50 basic points while maintaining the repo rate as unchanged

In a statement issued here last evening, Jaitley said that it is a priority for the government to maintain a balance between growth and inflation.

RBI's monetary policy review today; interest rate change unlikely

RBINew Delhi: The Reserve Bank of India may maintain the status quo with regard to the key interest rate in its monetary policy review Tuesday in view of the need to curb inflation, which has remained stubbornly high.

RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan on Sunday called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and is believed to have discussed the macro-economic situation.

Rajan kept the policy rate unchanged at 8 percent at the previous review on April 1 as inflation, especially of food items, hovered at over 8 percent. Food inflation in April stood at 9.66 per cent and retail inflation at 8.59 percent.

Arun-JaitleyNew Delhi, May 5 : Alleging rigging in certain booths in the ongoing Lok Sabha election, the BJP Monday urged the Election Commission (EC) to stop "silent booth capturing".

"Booth capturing has started once again, particularly in West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh," BJP leader Arun Jaitley said after submitting a written complaint with the poll panel.

"In the two remaining phases, EC should try to stop this silent booth capturing," he said.

Jailtey, in a blog published Thursday, said all politicians interact with media after casting their vote.

"When constitutional institutions react in haste and even anger, they miss out the larger vision," Jaitley wrote in the blog.
