Though he has done all kinds of films, he is mainly remembered as the King of Tragedy. In the 1970s roles dried up for Kumar and after 1976 he left films for a five year break. In 1981 he returned with a character role in the blockbuster film Kranti and continued his career playing central character roles in hits. His last film was Qila in 1998. He has since retired from the industry.

According to sources, Dilip Kumar, who took birth on December 11, 1922 in Peshawar, Pakistan, is widely acknowledged for playing tragedy roles in flicks of 50s and 60s like Devdas, Deedar, Amar and Madhumati, which earned him the title of “Tragedy King”.

His birth name Muhammad Yusuf Khan was turned to screen name Dilip Kumar by Devika Rani, a leading actress of 40s and wife of Himanshu Rai (founder of Bombay Talkies).

President Pratibha Patil wished speedy recovery to Veteran Bollywood superstar Dilip Prez Wishes Speedy Recovery To Dilip Kumar Kumar, who has been admitted in the ICU of Indraprasth Apollo Hospital late Thursday night after his situation turned serious due to urinary tract infection. 

The group of doctors attended him reported that his condition is now stable, and soon he would be shifted out of ICU. 

The President also sent a flower bouquet through her assistant to Dilip Kumar, and later talked to Kumar at hospital and wished him speedy recovery.
