Shooting World Championships: Gagan Narang misses Olympic quota by a place

Gagan NarangGranada, Spain: Gagan Narang missed out on an Olympic quota by just one place as he finished sixth in the finals of 50-metre rifle prone while Prakash Nanjappa and Jitu Rai narrowly missed out on finals of men's 10-metre air pistol in the 51st Shooting World Championships here on Thursday.

After coming through the tough qualifying, Narang could total only 124.2 by the time the top 5, including the three medallists, were decided in the finals. Five Olympic quotas were on offer in the event.

Another Indian, Hariom Singh, could not make it to the finals after finishing 45th in the qualifying.

Bindra, Narang to spearhead Indian challenge, Sodhi axed

Abhinav-Bindra-Gagan-NarangNew Delhi, May 31 : Riflemen Abhinav Bindra and Gagan Narang will spearhead the Indian challenge while double trap exponent and Asian Games gold medallist Ronjan Sodhi was Saturday left out of the 30-member squad for the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games after a string of poor shows.

The National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) Saturday selected 30 shooters for the rifle, pistol and shotgun events. Some 10 shooters will take part in six shot gun events.

India strikes Gold at Commonwealth

Gagan NarangThe Commonwealth games are slated to begin in New Delhi later this year but the Commonwealth shooting championship has already begun in Tuglakabad at the Karni Singh Range. The start to this championship has already brought good news for Indian shooting fans when the duo of Gagan Narang and PT Raghunath won gold in the 10m Air Rifle pairs on Friday.

Another gold medal in the 25 m air rifle category was added in the kitty when Anisa Sayyed and Anurag Singh won on this category. India also had silver in their kitty when Virat Singh and Bapu Vanjare won in the 50 m air rifle category.

Gagan grabs gold medal in CWSC

Gagan-NarangIndia Team has started its campaign with a gold medal in the Common Wealth Shooting Championship (CWSC) as Gagan Narang and PT Raghunath finished at the first position in the 10m air rifle pair event on Friday. Gagan carded 599 points out of 600 while Raghunath scored 594 to lead India to their first gold medal on the opening day of the tournament at the Tughlakabad Range in New Delhi.

Indian pair scored a total of 1193 followed by England with 1185 points while Bangladesh bagged bronze medal.
