US envoy meets Egyptian president as part of Middle East tour

Egypt, CairoCairo- US special envoy George Mitchell is holding talks with Egyptian president Hosny Mubarak on Saturday in Cairo as part of his Middle East tour to promote peace in the region.

Mitchell arrived in Cairo on Friday night, coming from Israel and the Palestinian territories, and met with Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit.

After the meeting Mitchell praised the Egyptian role in establishing peace in the Middle East and told reporters that the US was committed to "comprehensive peace" in the region.

US envoy Mitchell meets with Israeli premierTel Aviv  - United States envoy George Mitchell met with Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday in Tel Aviv, the first such meeting since the hardline Israeli government took office on March 31.

Mitchell also held talks with opposition leader Tzipi Livni, with whom he stressed US support for a two-state solution to the Middle Conflict, saying a sustainable peace in the Middle East was in US national interests.

George MitchellJerusalem - United States special envoy George Mitchell met Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman Thursday morning, holding his first talks in Israel since the new government of hardline Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu took office last month.

Meeting Israeli President Shimon Peres earlier in the morning, the envoy again reiterated Barack Obama administration's commitment to Israeli security, but also to a two-state solution to the Middle East conflict.

Netanyahu's office has said his government is still undergoing a policy review, which will take several more weeks to complete.

Mitchell met Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak in Tel Aviv shortly after arriving in the country. On Thursday he will meet new Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman. It will be his first meeting with them since they took office at the end of last month.

George MitchellAmman - US Middle East envoy George Mitchell held talks Saturday with Jordan's King Abdullah II and pledged Washington's commitment to the establishment of an "independent Palestinian state" that lives in peace with Israel, according to a royal court statement.

"We seek the establishment of comprehensive peace, the setting up of an independent Palestinian state that lives in peace and security alongside Israel and building up a prosperous future for all peoples for the region," the royal court statement quoted Mitchel as telling King Abdullah.
