Sofia mayor to head Bulgaria's next government

Sofia mayor to head Bulgaria's next government Sofia - Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov on Thursday tasked former bodyguard, police official and now Sofia Mayor Boyko Borisov with building the country's next government.

Borisov received the mandate two days after the new Parliament convened for the first time since the July 5 elections, with his GERB party holding 116 of the legislature's 240 seats. He now has a week to propose the cabinet list.

Bulgarian President Parvanov to discuss gas in Moscow

Bulgaria MapSofia - Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov would travel to Moscow Wednesday to discuss measures aimed at averting another gas crisis, local media reported Tuesday.

He would meet both President Dmitry Medvedev and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, it was announced in Sofia.

Bulgaria, which depends almost exclusively on Russian gas it receives across Ukraine and Romania, was hit hard by the gas row between Moscow and Ukraine in January. (dpa)

Bulgaria: US to remain global leader under Obama

BulgariaSofia  - Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov on Wednesday expressed confidence the United States would remain the "leader in building and strengthening of a peaceful and prosperous world" under Barack Obama's presidency.

"I and the Bulgarian nation congratulate your election as president of the US and wish you success in the highly responsible mission of heading a great country ... a major player in the world's arena," Parvanov said in a statement.
