Li Na not at her best but into last eight in Madrid

Li-NaMadrdi, May 8 : Chinese tennis star Li Na was forced to dig deep in order to defeat No. 16 seed Sloane Stephens 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 in two hours and move into the quarterfinals of the WTA Madrid Open here Thursday.

Despite her progress, Li Na was not satisfied with her performance in which she made over 40 unforced errors, reports Xinhua.

The first set saw Li Na play her worst tennis since arriving at Madrid. Perhaps unhappy at her third consecutive early start, the World No. 2 was never able to find her rhythm on court and while struggling with her own serve, she also failed to deal with that of her rival.

Li NaJohannesburg, Jan 26  : Chinese tennis ace Li Na reportedly had her fans roaring with laughter with her wisecracks during her speech following her Australian Open victory on Saturday at Melbourne Park.

Li secured her second Grand Slam title in her third Australian Open final after overcoming a tense first set to beat Slovakia's Dominika Cibulkova 7-6 (7/3), 6-0.

According to Sport24, firing out the jokes, Li thanked her agent Max Eisenbud, who was sitting in her players' box , for making her rich and gave damningly faint praise to her long-suffering husband Jiang Shan, her former coach and often the butt of her jokes.

Li Na beats Cibulkova for maiden Australian Open title

Li-Na-Australian-OpenMelbourne, Jan 25 : China's third-seeded Li Na beat Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia 7-6(7-3), 6-0 to win her first Australian Open women's singles title here Saturday.

Both players broke each other's service twice and forced a tiebreak in the first set. Mini-breaks were exchanged in the tiebreak before Li served out to win the first set.

Cibulkova failed to hold her serve in the second set and Li took only 27 minutes to win the set and match.

It was Li's second Grand Slam title after she won the 2011 French Open.(IANS)

Williams, Li into second round at China Open

Serena-Williams-Li-NaBeijing, Sep 30 : World No. 1 Serena Williams and local-favourite Li Na both powered into the second round with easy wins while third seed Agnieszka Radwanska was given an early scare at the China Open tennis here.

Williams, a former China Open champion, was barely troubled by her Russian opponent Elena Vesnina, needing only an hour and 25 minutes to wrap up the opening round win Sunday, reports Xinhua.

"She serves really well, I just had to be ready for everything," said Williams, who broke Vesnina five times in the match.

Li Na to play Djokovic in battle of sexes

It will be a charity match and its income will go to a tennis development fund in China, the organisers said Friday, reports Xinhua.

Li--NaMelbourne, Jan 24 : China's top women's tennis player Li Na Thursday said after winning her semifinal encounter at the Australian Open that she has learned to cool down on court.

"It's like Hollywood, you know. You don't have to show your opponent what you are thinking," Li said at the after-match press conference here at the Rod Laver Arena, reports Xinhua.

The sixth seed beat second-seeded Maria Sharapova 6-2, 6-2 in the first women's semifinal match. The victory sent Li to her second final at the Australian Open and also her third Grand Slam final. Li was runner-up at the Australian Open and winner of the French Open in 2011.

The 19-year-old Stephens saved five match points before the first-seeded Belarusian took the 6-1, 6-4 semifinal victory in one hour and 41 minutes, reports Xinhua.

Azarenka broke Stephens in the first game and again in the fifth and seventh to wrap up the first set in 33 minutes.
