No alliance with Congress or BJP, says Karunanidhi

M-KarunanidhiChennai, Dec 20 : DMK president M. Karunanidhi Friday clarified that he had announced at the party's general council meeting that they will not align with the Congress or Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP).

Karunanidhi, addressing the party's general council meeting Sunday, had said that DMK will not have an alliance with either the Congress or the BJP.

He said in a statement issued here Friday that despite his announcement to media, some supporters of BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi or Congress' sympathisers were deliberately twisting his statement in favour of their respective parties.

Karunanidhi: Grand old man of Tamil politics is 90

M-KarunanidhiChennai, June 3 : M. Karunanidhi, former Tamil Nadu chief minister, DMK president and one of India's most senior politicians, turned 90 Monday.

Karunanidhi began the day by cutting a birthday cake at his residence in Gopalapuram area here with close aides and family members cheering him on. He also planted a tree at his other residence in CIT Colony here.

As is his usual practice on birthdays, Karunanidhi paid tributes at the memorials of DMK founder and fomer chief minister C. N. Annadurai and E. V. K. Periyar, who founded the Dravida Kazhagam from which the DMK emerged.

To consult lawyers on wife's appearance in CBI court: Karunanidhi

M-KarunanidhiChennai, June 1 : DMK president M. Karunanidhi said Saturday he would consult lawyers and chart out a course of action over the personal appearance of his wife Dayalu Ammal before a CBI court.

The special CBI court hearing the 2G spectrum allocation case in New Delhi had Friday dismissed the application of Dayalu Ammal seeking exemption from personal appearance, and directed her to appear before it July 8.

Speaking to reporters here, Karunanidhi said: "As the court's order is not final, what should be done will have to be decided after discussions with lawyers."

India should boycott CHOGM: Karunanidhi

Karunanidhi Friday said India should not only boycott the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) slated to be held in Sri Lanka later this year but also gather the support of other countries to prevent the summit from being held in the island nation.

"India should understand the feelings of all the Tamils and chart out its strategy accordingly," Karunanidhi said in a statement issued here.

Coal mine probe should be honest: Karunanidhi

m-karunanidhiChennai, April 27 : DMK president M. Karunanidhi said Saturday everything relating to the investigation in the coal mine allocation scam should be done in an honest manner.

"My view is that everything should be honestly done," he told reporters.

He was replying to the question about the submission made by the director of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to the Supreme Court that union Law Minister Ashwani Kumar had vetted its draft report.

KarunanidhiChennai, April 19  : DMK president M. Karunanidhi Friday wondered how one could believe that a prime minister could be misled by his minister, referring to the draft report of the joint parliamentary committee
(JPC) on the 2G spectrum allocation.

Speaking to reporters here, Karunanidhi asked: "How could it be believed that a minister misled the prime minister?"

The draft report of the JPC, circulated among the members Thursday, has blamed DMK's A. Raja, the former telecom minister, for the spectrum allocation while clearing Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Finance Minister P. Chidambaram.

j-jayalalithaChennai, March 19 : Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J.  Jayalaltihaa Tuesday ridiculed DMK leader M.  Karunanidhi for quitting the UPA, saying he should have done this in 2009 when the LTTE was crushed.

She accused Karunanidhi of covering up his earlier blunder when he failed to act when Colombo militarily crushed the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).

"The plan of Karunanidhi will not succeed and the people of Tamil Nadu will teach him a lesson," she said. "People are fed up with such dramas enacted by Karunanidhi."

M-Karunanidhi37New Delhi, March 18 : Three senior ministers will hold talks with DMK chief M. Karunanidhi, and any decision on voting on a resolution at the UN Human Rights Council on Sri Lanka will be taken after talking to allies, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kamal Nath said Monday.

Kamal Nath said Home Minister P. Chidambaram, Defence Minister A. K. Antony and Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad will meet Karunanidhi in Chennai.

"Three senior ministers will meet him (Karunanidhi) and will discuss the UN resolution and how it should be presented. The government will decide after that," Nath told reporters.

Tamil Eelam Supporter's Organisation (TESO) called for the strike urging the central government to support the anti-Sri Lanka resolution sponsored by the US in the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC).

Public transport buses and auto-rickshaws were plying on the roads while some commercial establishments remained closed.

Karunanidhi, whose party is a major constituent of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government at the centre, said: "Every time fishermen from Tamil Nadu are attacked by Sri Lankan Navy, leaders of political parties issue statements of condemnation.  Nevertheless, the attacks continue."

"I have all the evidence and when the time comes, (I will) prove the charges in court," Karunanidhi told the media.

The former chief minister spoke after Jayalalithaa threatened to sue him for making what she was said was a "wild reckless charge".
