US ambassador meets ModiGandhinagar, Feb 13 - US Ambassador Nancy Powell Thursday met Gujarat Chief Minister and BJP prime ministerial nominee Narendra Modi in the state capital here.

The meeting between the US envoy and Modi, widely regarded as a strong contender for the prime minister's post, marks a change in stance of the US which had denied the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader a visa in 2005 over the 2002 Gujarat riots.

Powell was presented a bouquet of roses by Modi, after which she and her aides held a meeting with him.

Earlier on February 11, Ministry of External Affairs ( MEA) spokesperson that it is normal for foreign diplomats or ambassadors of different countries to make request to the External Affairs Ministry to facilitate their meetings with constitutionally elected and functionaries of states.

US will work with India on child survival issues: Envoy

Nancy-PowellChennai, Feb 7 : U. S. Ambassador to India Nancy Powell on Thursday said her country would work with India on issues related to child survival.

Participating in the inaugural session of the India's Call to Action Summit for Child Survival and Development at Mahabalipuram, near Chennai, Ambassador Powell said Thursday''s summit has proved the commitment of India's leaders to the global community and to the children of India.

Stating that the U. S. Government is proud to be a part of this initiative, Powell said: "We look forward to working with the Government of India on addressing critical child survival issues."

India, US set to sign $8 billion worth of new deals, Powell

The new US ambassador to India, Nancy Powell has said that India and the US are set to sign an additional $8 billion deal for direct commercial and foreign military sales as India merged one of the leading importers of defense equipment from the country.

She pointed out that the defense relationship between the two countries has grown at the fastest rate in Asia pacific region. "With the C-17 and C-130J sale, we have more than doubled our total foreign military sales and posted sales making India the third largest FMS market for 2011,"' she said. Powell was speaking at the 20th annual general meeting of the American Chamber of Commerce.
