Personal ambitions ruining BJP: Gadkari

Nitin-Gadkari-The crisis in the BJP was not because of small leaders but the “over ambitious” senior leaders who were seeking more and more in terms of posts and perks for themselves, said party president Nitin Gadkari on Wednesday.

Gadkari’s plain-speak came at a closed-door session on the opening day of the three-day conclave of the party’s national executive near here.

BJP spokesman Ravi Shankar Prasad briefed reporters later.

“Our problems come not from small leaders but from the big ones, who have got everything and yet are wanting more at any cost,” Gadkari was quoted as having said.

Nitin GadkariNew Delhi, Jan 5 : Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Nitin Gadkari Tuesday promised to examine the case of former Karnataka minister Shobha Karandlage, who quit the ministry following a revolt that hit the BJP government in the state last year, party sources said.

The sources said Karandlage Tuesday met Gadkari for about half hour and explained the circumstances that forced Chief Minister B. S. Yeddyurappa to ask her to resign in a bid to placate the dissidents.

The sources said BJP leader Arun Jaitley was also present at the meeting, which took place after Karandlage flew to New Delhi for a day.

He will call on Thackeray at the latter's residence, the official said.

Soon after his arrival here, Gadkari will garland the statue of Maratha warrior king Chhatrapati Shivaji at Shivaji Park in central Mumbai.

Then, he will visit Chaityabhoomi, the memorial dedicated to Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar and the Veer Savarkar memorial, both at Shivaji Park.

"Discipline is not something to talk about, it has to be executed. Indiscipline will not be tolerated," Gadkari, who took over as the BJP president last week, said in his first press conference here.

Gadkari, who himself is a RSS member, denied any interference from the organisation in the BJP's day-to-day activities.

"RSS does not want to takeover the BJP or dictate," Gadkari said while addressing his first press conference at the party's office at Ashoka Road here.

He was reacting to a question on taking back firebrand leaders like Uma Bharti, Kalyan Singh and K N Govindacharya.

"I have not got gone to Delhi. After going, I will hold discussions with party leaders, then only I can tell what is the decision," he told reporters here.

Gadkari said a decision on finalizing the name of the party''s state unit chief for Kerala would also be taken after consultations with colleagues in New Delhi.

The missive to Gadkari - who hails from Nagpur in the heart of Vidarbha - was contained in a statement from Kishor Tiwari, the chief of the Vidarbha Jan Andolan Samiti that is agitating for the new state to be carved out of Maharashtra.

Gadkari, chief of the BJP's Maharashtra unit, was warmly embraced by senior party colleagues soon after outgoing president Rajnath Singh said that he had already stepped down.

Gadkari had earlier said he would formally take charge of the party Dec 24.    

Saturday's announcement comes a day after Sushma Swaraj replaced the veteran L. K. Advani as the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha to mark a generational change in the country's main opposition party.    (IANS)

Nitin Gadkari New Delhi, Dec 19 : Maharashtra Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief Nitin Gadkari Saturday said he was "very happy" to take charge of the main opposition party nationally.

"I am very happy the party is giving me the highest responsibility," Gadkari, 52, told reporters as he reached the BJP national headquarters on Ashoka Road here to attend the BJP Parliamentary Board meeting.    

"I have come here to accept the responsibility. I will act for the politics of development," he said.

Gadkari's name as the next president was formally announced at the Parliamentary Party meeting Friday.

"Gadkari will arrive in Delhi at 10.45 a. m. He will be welcomed at the airport by hordes of supporters. He will take over the charge of party president from Rajnath Singh," said a party spokesperson.
