Chandy to participate in Suminfra 2013 summit

Oommen-ChandyChennai, Sep 28 : Kerala Chief Minister Oomen Chandy is expected to participate at the 11th edition of the Suminfra 2013, an infrastructure summit organised by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) here Oct 7-8, the industry body said.

According to CII, the two-day summit would feature an exclusive session on State Integrated Infrastructure Promotion (SIIP) to showcase the opportunities for private sector in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu, and Chandy and Industries Minister P. K. Kunhalikutty have agreed to join the Kerala session.

Kerala ready to be a U-17 World Cup host: Chandy

oommen-chandyThiruvananthapuram, July 24 : Kerala is ready to be one of the hosts of the 2017 U-17 World Cup if it is allocated to India by football world body FIFA, Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said Wednesday.

"We are agreeable to hosting the event in Kerala. We will soon ink a MoU with the (union) sports ministry," Chandy told reporters here Wednesday.

The union Government last month gave the go-ahead to India's ambitious bid to host the U-17 Football World Cup in 2017, that is already being backed by FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke.

Not allergic to judicial probe in solar scam: Chandy

oommen-chandyKozhikode (Kerala) July 20 : Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy Saturday said that he was not allergic to a judicial probe into what is called the solar scam.

"At the moment, a police investigation is on. The Left opposition is not interested in the truth; all they want is to cash in on the matter politically. First, let the police probe report come out. If people are not happy with that probe report, we are not averse to a judicial probe," Chandy said, addressing Congress workers here.

Chandy has been facing ire in the matter, as the Left opposition has called for his resignation, and pressed for a judicial probe.

Chandy gets clean chit in palm oil import case

Oommen-ChandyKochi, June 25 : The Kerala High Court Tuesday gave a clean chit to Chief Minister Oommen Chandy in the palm oil import case, dismissing a petition filed by CPI-M veteran V. S. Achuthanandan and former bureaucrat and legislator K. J. Alphonse.

The two petitioners had approached the high court to set aside the verdict of the Thrissur Vigilance Court in May last year that accepted a report giving a clean chit to Chandy by a vigilance probe team.

The vigilance probe team had concluded that Chandy had no role in the import of palm oil.

Left opposition says Chandy must go

Oommen-ChandyThiruvananthapuram, June 15 : Kerala's Left opposition Saturday sought the resignation of Chief Minister Oommen Chandy Saturday over the contact that members of his staff maintained with a woman who has been arrested in a cheating case.

Saturday was the fourth day that the matter was being raised by members of the opposition.

A TV channel Saturday carried a one-hour interview with Biju Radhakrishnan, who had been in a live-in relationship with the arrested woman, Saritha S. Nair. Radhakrishnan confirmed that his former partner had maintained contacts with two members of the chief minister's office.

Chandy to meet Sonia over cabinet berth for Chennithala

Oommen-ChandyThiruvananthapuram, May 31 : Unable to arrive at a consensus on the induction of state Congress president Ramesh Chennithala into the cabinet, the state Congress unit has sought the party high command's intervention.

Sources say Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has sought an appointment with Congress president Sonia Gandhi Tuesday.

The current impasse arose as Chennithala is expected to demit the office as the state Congress party chief, on completing eight years in that post.

Given his stature, his supporters within the party have demanded that he be made the state home minister, and possibly also the deputy chief minister.

Media should show positives: Chandy

Addressing the media here after delivering a speech on 'Current Politics and Kerala's Development', Chandy said the diaspora is the key to the state's progress.

"They (diaspora) see the developments that are taking place across the globe. They wish that similar development happens in their home state of Kerala. Here, the media can become more positive," said Chandy.

Oommen-ChandyThiruvananthapuram, April 30 : Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy Tuesday rubbished media reports about a Tamil Nadu government employee acting as a spy in the state secretariat and passing on vital documents on the water sharing dispute between the two states.

"Media reports are wrong. I have read the intelligence report. It says that no vital documents or any information was passed on to Tamil Nadu," Chandy told reporters after the weekly cabinet meeting here.

Ernst & Young opens new facility in Kerala

The facility was inaugurated by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy along with Minister for Home and Vigilance Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, and Minister for IT and Industries P. K. Kunhalikutty.

The new Global Shared Services (GSS) and Innovation Center would help EY enhance service delivery and provide quality support to internal clients beyond borders. It will accommodate about 1,000 employees.

Kerala has nothing to learn from Gujarat: Chandy

Oommen-ChandyThiruvananthapuram, April 24 : Chief Minister Oommen Chandy Wednesday said Kerala has nothing to learn from Gujarat, as the state has its own "model of development". The comment came while Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi is visiting the state.

"The Kerala model of development is one that is accepted worldwide and we do not have anything to learn from Gujarat. Just look at our standards of public health and the education standards that we have achieved," Chandy said, while speaking to reporters after the weekly cabinet meeting.

CM Chandy inaugurates biogas plant at SecretariatKerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on Sunday inaugurated a biogas plant on the Government Secretariat premises.

Installed by Bio Flame-Biogas and Energy Private Limited, the plant uses modern technology and can process biodegradable as well as solid waste.

The plant is capable of processing up to one hundred kilograms of biowaste an hour and producing eight to ten kilograms equivalent of fuel.

Chandy said that there was a need to give importance to processing of waste at the source and installing biogas plants at organizations and houses. 

Set up special court to try marines in Kerala: Chandy

Oommen-ChandyThiruvananthapuram, March 23 : Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy Saturday wrote to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh urging that the special court to try two Italian marines on murder charges be set up in the state itself.

"We wish to designate the sessions court at Kollam, where the marines case came up for trial. It should be noted that all records and evidences are before this court as the investigation agency had submitted it to them," said Chandy.

He also pointed out that if the special court is set in Delhi, all the witnesses in the case will have to frequently travel there.

Kerala CM meets PM

manmohan-singh-oommen-chandyNew Delhi, March 13 : Kerala Chief Minister Ooman Chandy Wednesday met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to discuss the return of two Italian marines guilty of killing two Indian fishermen.

Chandy met the prime minister around 12.30 a. m. at his office in parliament complex after Manmohan Singh made a statement in the Lok Sabha, warning of consequences for Italy if the the marines didn't return.

"The prime minister's statement is very strong and we hope Italy will obey the Indian law," Chandy told reporters.

Kerala to have new zooThrissur (Kerala), March 12 : Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy will lay the foundation stone for a state-of-the-art zoo at Puthoor near here Saturday.

Speaking to IANS, veterinarian and elephant expert Jacob Cheeran said that this project has been in the pipeline for a while.

"The zoo will come up in a 330-acre area which was originally degraded forests and had cashew plantations. It will be completed in three stages in seven years," said Cheeran, a committee member of the first expert group that was set up to draw a roadmap for the zoo.

All hurdles cleared for Kochi Smart City: Chandy

/Oommen-ChandyThiruvananthapuram, Jan 18 : All hurdles have been cleared for the much-hyped and much-delayed Rs. 5,000 crore ($1 billion) Kochi Smart City, Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said here Friday.

"The last hurdles in the project have been overcome. Our request to make the entire project under a single SEZ (special economic zone) has been approved by the central government. This had caused a delay. Work will soon commence," Chandy said.

Sworn in on May 18, 2011, the chief minister earned high praise for the manner in which he set about his work. He had only a slender margin of four seats in the 140-member Kerala assembly but that did not appear to impede his functioning.

At the end of 2011, Chandy was hailed for the first 100 days in office; he had held many people-contact programmes and on one occasion, was on his feet for more than 19 hours at a stretch.
